Afternoon Classes

Afternoon Classes

Afternoon classes are available for an additional charge. Each afternoon class runs for 4 hours per week over Monday to Thursday. Friday afternoons are left free for independent study, sports and social activities. Afternoon classes operate during weeks when there is enough student interest in them.

Please note:

  • Classes that provide support for assessable components in the IB Diploma Programme are designed to develop students' skills and increase their understanding of the work required. Students are not provided with direct support for their personal assessable work.
  • OSC sends a brief report on all classes supporting IB assessment to the student's school to confirm what was covered in the class.

Theory of Knowledge - a compulsory part of the IB Diploma. This course helps you to consider and discuss philosophical, moral, ethical and cross-cultural issues. You will:

increase your understanding of knowledge issues
learn to challenge and appreciate your own and other people’s views
develop your understanding of the assessment criteria

During the course, reference will be made to ToK Essays from previous examination sessions, but not those for the 2011 examination sessions.

World Literature (Language A1) - a compulsory part of Language A1 study in which students must choose their own essay topics and develop their themes independently, in their own time. This class will:

guide you in your choice of topic and themes
explain assessment criteria and requirements
help you to present your research and ideas

Students will gain an understanding of how they can develop their own World Literature assignments, but the class does not provide individual guidance.

Biology Internal Assessment - is a compulsory part the Biology course and counts for 24% of your final mark.  This course will:

explain how the assessment criteria are applied
give you the opportunity to use the criteria in practice
show you how to gain the maximum marks for each criterion

The course 'models' the process of labwork in Biology. Students will not be given guidance on Internal Assessment work done in school.

Economics Internal Assessment – a portfolio of 4 commentaries is compulsory for all IB Economics students.  You have to show you can apply economic theory to real world situations.  This course will:

guide you in the choice of sources and the requirements for the commentaries
show you how best to apply economic concepts to articles and evaluate them
explain how the assessment criteria are applied

For the IB Diploma, students of Economics have to write commentaries on recent articles. This course will show how this can be done - using 'old' articles from the press.

SAT1 Classes - if you plan to go to college in the United States you will need to take the SAT1 Tests. This requires particular skills and students who have practised well beforehand tend to score higher. We hold separate classes for the three sections of the test;

Mathematics
Critical Reading
Writing

Written English - a class designed specifically for improving English writing skills and technique. You will cover:

grammar and sentence construction
organising and structuring essays
constructing a coherent argument in accurate, clear English

Study Skills - knowing how to organise your work in class and during private study is an essential skill for effective study. On this course you will learn how to:

organise your time, your homework and other assignments
take efficient notes and organise them for ease of reference and revision
use library and internet resources to research essays and assignments

Using the TI-Series Calculator in IB Mathematics - this course looks at the power and scope of this Graphic Display Calculator. Learn how to use this calculator knowledgeably and you will:-

understand how functions behave and solve equations at any level
work faster and check complex calculations
write good portfolios (worth 20% of your final grade!)
